How to Flush Your Water Heater
Over time, sediment and minerals can accumulate in your water heater, reducing its efficiency and potentially causing damage to your water heater. Flushing your water heater out once a year can help to remove these deposits and keep your unit running smoothly. While hiring a professional to flush your water heater typically yields the best results, you can do this process on your own. All you need is a hose, a bucket, and some free time.
Below is the step-by-step process for flushing your water heater:
- Turn off the power or gas supply to your water heater and allow it to cool for several hours.
- Shut off the cold water supply valve to the water heater.
- Connect a garden hose to the drain valve located near the bottom of the storage tank. Make sure the other end of the hose is in a safe location where water can be drained out without causing any damage.
- Open the pressure relief and drain valves to drain the tank.
- Once all the water has drained, turn on the cold water supply valve and allow the water to run for a few minutes to flush out any remaining sediment.
- Close the drain and pressure relief valves and allow the tank to fill with water once again.
- Once the tank is full, turn on the power or gas supply to the water heater and wait for it to heat up again.
If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, contact Smart Plumbers & Rooters to perform the service for you. We are familiar with all makes and models of equipment and always get the job done safely and correctly.

Benefits of Upgrading to a Tankless Water Heater
If you’re in the market for a new water heater, you might want to consider a tankless model. Many homeowners are making the switch to tankless water heaters due to the many benefits they provide. Unlike traditional water heaters (which store heated water in a tank), tankless water heaters heat your water on demand, providing a constant supply of hot water without the need for a large storage tank. This can lead to significant energy savings, as tankless heaters only heat the water when you need it, eliminating the standby heat loss associated with traditional units.
Additionally, because tankless units are smaller and more compact than traditional units, they can be mounted on a wall, freeing up valuable space in your home. Finally, tankless units have a longer lifespan than traditional units, with an average life expectancy of 20 years (compared to 10 – 15 years for traditional units), which can provide additional cost savings over time.
Considering a tankless water heater? Smart Plumbers & Rooters has access to top-performing, energy-efficient water heating equipment. We work closely with you to understand your goals before selecting and installing the perfect system for your home.
